Acknowledgements

I wish to thank all those who helped me over a long period in the preparation of this book.
As always the staff of the Cavan County Library were most helpful as were the personnel of the National Archives, the Head of the Department of Irish Folklore, the Ordnance Survey Office and the Anglo Celt newspaper, from which I extracted R.V.Walker's lovely story about the birth and baptism of St Mogue.
I thank the Governors and Guardians of Armagh Public Library for permission to publish a picture of the Shrine of the Bell of Saint Moaedhog; the National Museum of Ireland for permission to reproduce free of charge, pictures of the Breac Moaedhog and the Lissanover Collar of Gold; and the Ulster Museum, Belfast, who allowed me to reproduce a photograph of the Bawnboy pin.
I am grateful to Bishop Francis McKiernan for details of the clergy of the Dioceses of Kilmore, who served in the parish of Templeport, as well as information on the Hearth Money Rolls. Thank you to the Bishop Michael Mayes and Rev. Robert Keogh for the names of Church of Ireland Clergy in Templeport.

I also thank the staff at Garda Headquarters in Dublin for their help in identifying members who served in Bawnboy over the years.
Individually, I acknowledge with thanks the help from:
The relatives Michael J. Murphy, folklorist, for his story of the Canadian Mirical Worker which he gave me some years ago.
The Headmaster of St Mogue's College for the names of teaching staff.
The Heery Family of Cloneary for the diary of Michael Heery N.T. telling the story of the family in Derrycassan for the first nine months of 1940.
Mrs Anna Donohoe and Rumold Dolan for their details of the Templeport Show.
Mrs Nora Kellagher for her story of the I.C.A..
George Gott for his account of the Cavan & Leitrim Narrow Guage Railway.
Iris Neill for her information on N.S.teachers at Killyran and Bobby Storey on teachers at Brackley N.S..
Oliver Brady who supplied details of the Templeport T.A.A.
Michael Cullivan for cover design and illustrations.
I wish especially to thank all those who provided old and modern photographs covering the period.

Finally, I thank members of my own family:
Aideen for her help preparing and editing the text;
Cathal for his photography of the locallity;
And Ciaran for his unstinting help help throughout, and generally smoothing out unforseen difficulties.

To everyone concerned,  "Go raibh mile maith agat"
