Ballymagauran

Ballymagauran village, in a sylvan setting at the lake shore of the same name and on the borders of Co. Leitrim, is quite close to the Shannon-Erne Waterway which passes through the lake. The village is about nine Km. from Ballinamore on the road to Ballyconnell-Killashandra.

Fairs were held there on May 23rd, August 12th and November 23rd. Nowadays, the May Fair is an annual event with several attractions and attended by large numbers of people. The ruins of an old Magauran Castle are still there by the lakeshore.

Two thriving business houses in the village are The Ballymac Inn and The Mucky Duck. Breege Cosgrove runs The Ballymac Inn which is a popular centre for locals and tourists, providing en-suite accommodation, while The Mucky Duck pub, run by the Galligan family is far from being mucky, though the lake has its fair share of ducks nearby. There is a lakeside guesthouse on the road which passes the old castle. Close by in Co. Leitrim is Ballinacur Bridge and Haughton’s Shore Mooring, a popular resting site which opens into beautiful Garadice Lough.
