56) Adjoining the Hand's
place is a small one-storey house in which David Downey, late of Killyran,
lives.
57) Many tenants occupied this house
down the years. It was a favourite dwelling for the wives and families
of R.I.C., Gardaí, teachers and many others. Ownership of the place
changed frequently as also did the tenants.
58) On our left as we go forward, is
the recently built house of Chris McCaffrey with tenants Áine McCluskey
and her daughter Aisling. In the next house are Finbarr and Teresa McCaffrey
and their two boys, Conor and Cathal, while Mrs. Mary Anne McCaffrey,
occupies the third house.
59) Mrs. McCaffrey has a long connection
with Bawnboy and its surroundings. Willie and his wife Mary Anne came
to live in Killycrin after their marriage, and all their children were
born there, Leo, Bernadette, Nuala, Siobhán, Raymond, Philomena,
Chris and Finbarr. They came to their present house around 1970. Willie,
who came from Newtowngore brought new life to Bawnboy in more ways that
one. As well as being a competent shoemaker and mender, who took pride
in his work, Willie was a footballer of great speed and skill and a hurler
of class who played for the county hurling team with Garda Gerry Crowley.
