Before closing the records, mention must be made of a
well-remembered sports club that brought fame to the parish in bygone
days. I refer to Toberlyan Tug o' War team. For years and years even when
other sports reached a low level in the parish the Toberlyan team continued
to take on and as a rule defeat all comers. 'Heave Toberlyan' was the
rallying cry of their supporters, which rarely went unheeded.
At the County Cavan Tug o' War Championship, held in
Belturbet in 1947, the winning team on that day was, Hugh Fox, Coologe;
Tommy Brady, Tonyhallagh; Pee Kellegher, Toberlyan; John Reilly, Cormeen;
Tommy Bannon, Coologe; Patsy Reilly, Cormeen; John J. Kellegher, Toberlyan;
Eugene Donohoe, Coologe; Packie Kellegher, Toberlyan; Michael Bannon,
Coologe; Bennie Donohoe Jn., Bellaheady; Team Coach: Pee Dolan, Toberlyan.
Lastly we draw attention to the youth of the parish,
who are now taking their places on the sports field at football, hurling
and camogie. Some of these games are now played indoors but nonetheless
enjoyable, particularly when our climate makes our fields unplayable.
Basketball has become very popular, our girls leading the way.
Then we have the cultural side of activities, seen in
stage performances - music, singing, dancing and drama. Our set dancers
have won All-Ireland honours. The Réadóirí Novelty
Act Group has done likewise. The pictures which follow will tell the story
of their successes, of which the McGovern family, Ballymagauran is a shining
example at home and abroad.
