RIBBON SOCIETIES IN WEST CAVAN

County of Cavan

Ballyjamesduff
2nd Feby. 1842

Confidential

Sir,

You have enclosed a list of persons who are suspected of being members of Ribbon Societies throughout the County.

I am not authorised to state that information.

County of Cavan
Swanlinbar
4th February 1842

In reply to your communication of the 29th Novr I beg to say that I have procured all the information I could relative to Ribbon Societies in this neighbourhood which I give you underneath and can find a person to swear to its authenticity provided he receives a suitable remuneration. Should you come here on this duty, I wd suggest the expediency of your selecting a Petty Sessions Jury, which will prevent suspicion and probably be the means of ensuring you more certain information. I make this observation in consequence of so many magistrates having come here on similar duty and which excited a good deal of suspicion.
